Planning a photo session should be exciting, not stressful. Whether you’re prepping for an engagement shoot, maternity session, family photos, or just capturing a moment in time, this is about YOU. My goal is to help you show up feeling confident, comfortable, and ready to have some dang fun—and I promise, you don’t need to be a fashion model or Pinterest expert to do that.
Below are some of my favorite tips to help you prep for your session in a way that feels authentic, meaningful, and totally on-brand with your vibe.

Pick Color Combos That Pop
Choose colors that complement your location instead of blending in. If we’re shooting in the desert, lean into earthy tones like rust, cream, sage, or terracotta. Shooting in the forest or a field? Jewel tones, warm neutrals, and deep greens always photograph beautifully.
Avoid overly neon colors or bright whites, as they can blow out in-camera. Instead, pick colors that make you feel confident and that will stand out in your scenery.

Mix + Match Thoughtfully
If one of you wants to wear a print or pattern (think floral, stripes, or plaid), have the other wear a solid color to balance it out. Too many competing patterns can make a photo look overly busy and distract from you. Your outfits should add harmony, not chaos.
Play with Texture, Not Just Pattern
Instead of layering lots of designs, add depth with textures! Chunky knits, distressed denim, vintage tees, linen, or embroidered details bring subtle visual interest without taking away from your connection.
Textures photograph like a dream and give your photos that cozy, editorial feel.

Add Movement
Photos are frozen moments—but movement makes them feel alive. Flowing skirts, oversized sweaters, or breezy sleeves add beautiful energy. Whether your hair is catching the wind or your dress twirls mid-laugh, movement helps tell a more emotional and dynamic story.
Choose outfits you can move in comfortably—sit, spin, dance, whatever feels like YOU.
Accessorize for Personality
This is where you can really make it personal. Bring:
- Hats
- Funky jackets
- Jewelry
- Scrunchies
- Bandanas
Even if we don’t use them all, it gives us options and adds your signature style.

Where to Shop
If you’re looking to grab a few session-worthy pieces, here are some of my go-to client faves:
- Madewell
- Urban Outfitters
- Everlane
- Anthropologie
- Oak + Fort
- Zara
- Lulu’s
- Topshop
- Baltic Born
Special Notes
- Couples: This is your love story. If you need to take a shot before to shake the nerves off—go for it. Laugh, play, and soak it all in. This session is a celebration.
- Families: Bring a cozy blanket for sitting photos. Bribery candy for littles is 100% approved. Trust me.
- Maternity: Include items like ultrasound photos, baby shoes, or something from the nursery.
- Pets: Bring treats, leashes, and an extra set of hands if you can. They’re part of the fam too!
